Englewood Water Rescue

285web1.JPG

06/12 ~ Around 0100 hours Englewood Firefighters were called to a rollover accident just west of Broadway on Hampden Avenue.  First arrivng Englewood Police Officers reported one car in the water with parties trapped.  Engine & Medic 21 along with Battalion Chief 2 arrived within minutes and immediately jumped into action.  Two firefighters entered the water and began to search for victims.  Within seconds the first patient was found and pulled to shore, followed by a second patient, both in full arrest.  With two medic units on scene, resuscitation efforts quickly began and both victims were transported emergent to Swedish Medical Center.

While on scene of the first accident, a loud crash was heard nearby.  Again the crews jumped into action arrriving at Broadway & Old Hampden to find a two car t-bone accident with 3 patients.  The same medic units cleared Swedish, responded to the second accident and again transported the injured patients.  As if the two incidents weren't taxing resources enough, a third accident occurred a half block away where an intoxicated driver struck an Englewood Police Car which had been blocking traffic for the original accident.  A short pursuit ended several blocks away where once again, the same medics responded to treat another patient.

Once the second and third calls were taken care of, crews responded back to the original scene where the South Metro Dive Team had arrived to assist in the vehicle recovery.  One diver entered the water and hooked up the car to a heavy lift tow truck.  The vehicle was safely removed from the water, no injuries to any firefighters were reported.  Despite the heroic efforts of the EFD, sadly the two occupants of the submerged vehicle died on Sunday.  The other accidents resulted in minor injuries to 4 people.  Eric Hurst Photos
