02/03 ~ Just after 22:30 West Metro Dispatch alerted Wheat Ridge Fire to a Confirmed Structure Fire at 2690 Simms Street. First arriving Engine 72 found a two story, with basement, single family home with smoke showing. A water supply was established and the crew pulled an 1 3/4 line inside to conduct a primary and fire attack. Firefighters advanced into the basement where they found heavy fire conditions on the Delta side. High heat became a concern, prompting a team in the stairwell to order a second line to hold their egress. Before the line could be pulled, the attack team reported a loss in water pressure. Mechanical problems with the pumping engine were identified and command ordered an abandon of the structure.
All firefighters were able to safely abandon the structure despite heavy flames and burglar bars on all the windows. A 2nd Alarm and defensive attack were ordered and a detailed PAR was conducted. Two more water supplies, several 2 1/2 hand lines and two aerials were placed into operation at the peak of the incident. Crews were able to bring the stubborn fire under control by midnight, but remained on scene through the morning. Two occupants in the home safely evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters and no injuries were reported. Rick Luebke Photo
